The purchase of 128 Technology is already paying off for Juniper customers. The company was only acquired in 2020, but Juniper hasn’t lost any time in integrating the routing concepts into their own portfolio. What’s more, the 128 Technology software routers have been rebranded: in future they will be listed in the Juniper portfolio as Session Smart Routers (SSR).

The pandemic has highlighted just how necessary new concepts are in the routing sector. Since a year now, meetings in nearly all companies are being held using video call providers such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. But the general trend towards using applications in the cloud – “software as a service” – makes it increasingly clear that uniform routing for all data packages is an outdated concept.

Session Smart Routing can be integrated in all networks

So a completely new approach is needed. Juniper offers this with the software-based Session Smart Router, which is not only able to provide more intelligent routing, but also makes the session and applications visible – as well as assisting network security proactively with Zero-Trust security at the same time. Thanks to the software approach, the routers can be used in all environments: data centres, multi-cloud environments or connecting branch offices in a company are just a few potential applications.

Another advantage is that Session Smart Routers (SSR) can be used independently of the network technology. So there is no need to replace existing hardware, because the SSRs also use conventional protocols such as BGP and OSPF. This means it is possible to transition smoothly to Secure Vector Routing, without having to exchange existing hardware. Use in 5G networks is also possible, as is use with MPLS, private IP networks and the internet.

The advantages of Session Smart Routing

But what advantages does Session Smart Routing offer companies? Compared to tunnel-based routing, the data packages are considerably leaner. This also saves bandwidth, as MPLS and IPSEC generate solutions with every packet overhead. Because encapsulating is no longer necessary, latencies are reduced by up to 60 %. This is especially beneficial for video calls.

Another advantage of SSR is that routing can be performed based on applications. This is particularly useful for branch offices, for example, in order to use MPLS lines more efficiently. It enables connections to business servers to be routed via MPLS and connections to secure cloud services to be routed via the internet. Furthermore, connections such as MPLS, internet or 5G can be used dynamically to compensate for outages and bottlenecks.

The Session Smart Routers also offer monitoring of the connection quality at the application level. This enables faults in the network to be pinpointed accurately and solved. All the way into the cloud. The network transparency enables potential problems to be dealt with before users complain about a loss of quality. This is where users benefit from the amalgamation of 128 Technology with Juniper. Smart Session Routing supplements the principle of network transparency – which Juniper has already created for (cable-connected and wireless) local networks with its Mist Assurance Services.

Zero-Trust for all data packages

Although tunnels and overlays are not used, this in no way means a reduction in security. Quite the opposite: data security is one of the fundamental principles of the solution and is built in right from the start. With SSR, the Zero-Trust principle is also used for routing. No application, no device and no user can send data if it does not comply with the guidelines. In addition, all routers and sessions are authenticated, and traffic is end-to-end encrypted as a matter of principle.

Summary

With Session Smart Routing, Juniper is offering a routing technology for the future which provides solutions for current problems and is constantly thinking ahead with regard to security. As the software-based routers support conventional routing protocols, they can be integrated step-by-step into all networks, thus enabling a smooth transition. Zero-Touch Provisioning (ZTP) also enables larger structures to be implemented extremely rapidly. We are happy to advise you on how your company can benefit from Session Smart Routing technology.
