Following the announcement of the takeover of Brocade Communication Systems by the chip manufacturer Broadcom and the prosed sale of the data centre division to Extreme Networks, the manufacturer Brocade is heading for a turbulent time.

Brocade customers are currently experiencing a great deal of uncertainty: reliability and continuity are the most important criteria for companies operating critical network infrastructures. This applies in particular to manufacturers of active network components. Having opted for a specific manufacturer, the customer commits himself for at least one investment cycle and also expects full support from the manufacturer. The goal of company takeovers is usually to cut down on superfluous staff by merging departments and to reduce costs by harmonising the joint product portfolio, thereby maximising profits.

How will the planned takeover impact Brocade customers?

Unclear roadmap: There is a question mark against the continuation of the present model series. It is uncertain whether product developments that have already been announced – and with which Brocade customers have planned future expansions of their data centres – will in fact ever be realised. If a decision is made in favour of Extreme Networks for certain product segments, mixed operation cannot be ruled out. Nor can it be ruled out that the manufacturer may force a changeover to new Extreme Networks model series when acquiring and using new endpoints.

Staff changes: As with almost every company takeover, there will be major changes in personnel. Some jobs will be lost due cuts to avoid the duplication of tasks. For the customer, that usually means a noticeable deterioration in support and in the resolution of technical disruptions. The innovative ability of the bought-out enterprise in the area of technical development also suffers enormously. In many cases, talented developers and network engineers feel forced to leave the company due to the uncertainty of their personal situation. Research and development lose their brain and the motor that drives product development. Brocade customers therefore have to brace themselves for negative effects such as restricted support and delayed or cancelled product renewals.

Unclear responsibilities during the transition period: The unsettled period of transition begins with the announcement of the takeover and often lasts for several years. Shifting responsibilities, vague processes, changing organisational structures and demotivated staff lead to a decline in quality in all areas. There is therefore a question mark against the manufacturer’s future reliability and the quality of support for Brocade customers.

After assessing the manufacturer’s situation, Brocade customers should therefore consider alternative courses of action without delay: change today to the reliable, long-established manufacturer Juniper Networks. Seize the opportunity to renew your network infrastructure and opt for a leading network manufacturer whom operators of critical infrastructure trust most: Juniper Networks.

What distinguishes Juniper Networks from Brocade / Extreme?

Juniper Networks’ extensive product portfolio contains established routing, switching and security solutions with ideal preconditions for Cloud integration. Juniper Networks invests very heavily in research and development to continue producing innovations and continuously advance the development of individual solutions. This commitment to innovation enables Juniper Networks to protect its investment.

Simplicity and flexibility are essential aspects in the deployment of Juniper network components. The Junos OS cross-platform operating system enables uniform device management and facilitates the introduction of new services and functions in your network infrastructure. At the same time, Juniper Networks provides the highest possible degree of flexibility in the choice of network architecture and design. Technologies such as Juniper Virtual Chassis, Virtual Chassis Fabric, Junos Fusion and IP Fabric provide you with different alternatives for constructing a high-availability data network.

In the age of the Cloud, support for network automation is absolutely essential. The unmatched implementation provided by Juniper Networks is the key to reducing complexity and costs in data centre networks. The uniform Junos OS operating system supports automation frameworks such as Puppet, Chef and Ansible, and also features a programmable Routing Protocol Daemon (rpd) using BGP, RIB, MPLS and L2VPN API.

With Juniper Networks, the investment costs across the entire lifecycle (TCO), including support costs, are lower than those for Brocade devices. Lifetime warranty programmes and access to extensive configuration and planning support materials facilitate modifications and expansion to your network and thus help to secure your investments.

Build future-viability into your network with Juniper Networks

Juniper Networks has understood the challenges in the network sector. The uniform Juniper Unite Cloud approach simplifies the structure and operation of your network across all areas. The end-to-end design forms one uniform network throughout the campus, branches and data centre. This results in simpler administration, reduced risks, increased agility, lower costs and an enhanced user experience.

Improve the security of your network by using Software-Defined Secure Network (SDSN) from Juniper Networks and facilitate the deployment of automation solutions in your enterprise by controlling network components via API or using the Contrail SDN Controller as a Cloud management platform.
